April 8 - Shrinking Miles

My mileage is starting to go down. I am suppose to run 4 miles this evening. I have normally been running 5 miles the weekday nights. Now it is 4 miles. Basically, I run to Post office and and a bit down Memorial and then around. That is not much at all!

I got ready to run, got my IPOD out and noticed my battery was dead on my IPOD. I really want to make sure this run is recorded in the system through my IPOD PLUS, so I charged it up for 1 hour and then headed out. Hopefully, I have enough juice to make it the 4 miles.

During that hour, I decided to do some more research on the internet. I did a search looking for blogs about past races. I found a lot of blogs about the race. Looks like in 2008, it rained in the morning and then cleared up after the race started and in 2009 it was HOT (around 80 - 85 degrees around 11 and 12). That is very hot to be running outside. Most of the blogs were runners who have run multiple marathons. Some were trying to run a marathon in every state and choose the Country Music Marathon for Tennessee. Each of the experienced runners wrote about how difficult the Nashville Marathon race was and that this course was one of the most challenging. Yikes! What did I sign up for? Did I sign up for one of the most challenging courses? Looks like it. I knew it was challenging when I signed up, but didn't know it was one of the most challenging. O well, gives me some more incentive to finish; not an excuse to not run. The 2009 blogs caught my attention the most. Someone actually died running the half marathon. It was not related to the heat, but it still reminds me that training is important!! Also, numerous blogs account for the number of participants that were on stretchers being toted off to the hospital. I guess my main goal is not only to finish but to stay out of the ambulence. That is always a good goal. In fact, one of the bloggers noted that he counted 10 participants on stretchers. One of the bloggers himselve was put on a stretcher for getting too hot. Once he was cooled down, he then got up and finished the marathon. Talking about tough! I just need to make sure I don't get on the stretcher in the first place.

Most of the bloggers for 2009 discussed that most everyone was walking the last 6 miles or so. You have to be smart about things. If your body is telling to slow down then you should. You can tell warning signs of getting too hot or pushing yourself too much. I need to watch this. I don't mind having to walk some of it, if I have too. I would like to say I ran the whole thing, but if I have to I'll do 1 mile walk, 1 mile run, etc. when I get closer to the finish. But, I need to make sure I am running the last mile.

Also, I searched some YouTube videos to see what the start line, race and finish line looked like and what to expect. It looks crowded, but not as crowded as I imagined.

I was able to think about all this on my 4 miles of running.
