Jan 30 - Snow

It actually snowed Friday. They predicted we could get 4 - 6 inches of snow. I had a hard time getting back home from Woodbury on Friday (Jan 29). Today I was scheduled to run a long run. It was very cold outside as well. Temperatures were in the 20s during the day and teens at night. I didn't run today due to the snow. The roads were slick. I would hate to slip and fall and hurt myself especially if I was running a long run. So no running tonight.

Jan 27 - Fast pace

I before I ran I set my mind to try to really run a fast pace on this "short run". I was scheduled to run 4 miles. I was focused on keep a fast pace.

4.01 miles - 34 min 13 seconds 8:31 minute mile pace, 604 calories burned.

I feel like I kept a pretty good pace tonight.

Jan 23 - Long run - 12 miles

Friday night and Saturday morning we had our Men's Leadership Retreat at Church. They had the meal catered. Knowing I was planning to run 12 miles I made sure I at a lot of carbs and "running food". I ate a lot. I bet the other guys wondered why I was eating so much.

Due to the retreat during the day I didn't get a chance to run during the day today as I had hoped. So I decided to run my long run after dark. I left at about 8:00 to run 12 miles. I started out running in the neighborhood. I ran down by Tohamhawk Trail (where the tornado hit) then I ran back up past Segal High School to Thompson Lane. I decided to run down Thompson Lane to River view subdivision. That was a long run. Thompson Lane has a bike lane I was able to run down. I always run against traffic so that cars are not coming up behind me. That way I know what's coming at me. I almost got to the river view subdivision when the mileage was having me turn around to come back. I then ran up Thompson Lane to Seagal Elementary and turned back into our subdivsion. I had about 2 miles left of running around the subdivision. My legs were really getting heavy around mile 10. So I fought there the stiffness for the next 2 miles. I felt I was making pretty good time. It was a great sense of accomplishment when I got home. I ran the last 400 meters as hard as I could. I had almost ran a half marathon in one evening.

12.01 miles, One Hour, 54 minutes and 36 seconds - 9:32 minute mile pace, 1805 cals burned.

I thought I had a pretty good pace, but I didn't think I was running a 9:32 minute pace. I believe the food that was catered helped me run this pace. If I kept this pace up for the marathon I finish the marathon in about 4 hours. That is a bit faster then I was planning. I will take it though. The only thing bad about running a long run at night is I will be going to bed within a few hours after getting done.

Jan 21 - 4 Miles

Busy season at work is coming on. Can I keep my training schedule up while I work through the busy season? The answer is "YES". I will need to make sure I have some good time management and possibly could include some late nights.

4.01 miles, 35:44 time, 8:54 minute mile, 603 calories

This was my fastest pace that I have run so far. I really pushed hard today. It was fun.

Jan 16 - Running Music

The music I had in my IPOD was good, but there was only 20 songs that I had been listening to. It was time to get some new songs and get organized. I went on ITUNES and found some new songs to get in my IPOD for my run. I also moved all the fast songs in a "Running music" folder. This way I don't have to listen to any slow songs while I am running. I purchased 4 songs. What songs are out there that would be fun to listen to. I dug for quite a while. I needed to also find a theme song for the run. I wanted one song that I could listen to right before I run and while I am cooling down. What song would that be? I ended up purchasing: Cotton Eye Joe (Live version) - it was fun to listen to and a little different, and 2 Bon Jovi songs - It's my Life and Livin On A Prayer. Bon Jovi has some great running music! Eye of Tiger by Survivor is a great workout song that speaks of working through challenges and fighting to win. I choose this as my theme song. I have always liked the song. Back to the 80s when I run.

Today is the long run - 11 miles! I ran the greenway course. I am almost at a half marathon. Unbelieveable!! I am really getting this done.

11.01 miles - 1 hour 52 minutes 33 seconds - 10:13 minute mile - 1655 calories burned

My race pace was a bit slower than my goal pace for the race. The question is, will I be at that pace for the marathon. If I am not, that is ok. I just want to finish the race. I struggled on this run, but I did it.

Jan 14 - 4 miles

Ran 4 miles today. Not so cold. In fact I ran without sweatpants today and wore shorts. It was a bit chilly, but it got better as I got into it.

4.11 miles - 37:06 minutes - 9:01 minute mile, 618 miles

It appears my pace is around the low 9 minute mile pace. That is a bit faster than I want to run the marathon. Not sure I can keep that pace up for 26.2 miles. I'll probably slow down the pace on the longer runs.

What do I think about while I am running - I have come up with my plan for the audit department at DVF for the next 25 years. Where do we want to be? What type of audit department do I want us to be like? How many CPAs working 100% audit?

I also consider what does the Bible mean on certain passages (why didn't the blind man see right off when Jesus healed him and other questions to ponder while I am running).

What do I want my kids to turn into? How will I deal with certain parenting issues?

Walt Disney World trip planning (we are going to Disney before Kayla turns 3) - Kids are free until they turn 3. We take each one of our kids to Disney right before they turn 3. We have gone to Disney twice so far.

I visualize the race a lot. What will it be like? What are my plans for the morning of the race?

Jan 12 - Run Fast

On the run today, I actually finished up about a half mile from home. That is my concern that I would end up at the end of my run away from home. I elected to try to see how fast I could run after running the 4 miles. I was already tired from the run and it was cold. I ended up getting the following:

.5 miles - 4:15 minutes, 8:30 minute mile, 75 calories burned.

I thought I was going a bit faster than that, but it is what it is.

Jan 12 - Back to running - warming up

Today was a busy day at the office and with the kids. I was not finished with what needed to get done till 10:00 that night. I still had to get my run in or I would really be behind schedule especially since I missed the run last Saturday.

So I headed out running at 10:15 or so. The temperature was in the high 20s. You can tell it has been cold when high 20s is "warmer". I actually could tell it was warmer.

4 mile run - 37:07 minutes, 9:14 minute mile pace, 604 calories

Jan 10 - TOO COLD

Today I was supposed to run 10 miles. The temperature at run time was 15 degrees with snow on the ground. Should I run or not? I decided it was TOO COLD to snow and I didn't want to slip on the snow or get hit by a car due to the slick roads. Here in Murfreesboro the roads are not cleared. Hopefully, this will not take me back too much. This is the first run that I didn't do. I think my reasons were good.

I almost decided to run on the treadmill, but I did not want to run on the treadmill and get used to the treadmill. The ground moves on the treadmill and it is significantly easier on the treadmill then outside. I didn't want to get used to the ground moving. So I elected to hold off on running for this time.

Jan 6 - Cold again

I am starting to used to running when it is really cold. I was running again with the temperature less than 20 degrees. Brrrr. I wore my gloves this time. Made a big difference. Time - 27:09 minutes, average pace 8:59, 494 cal. burned. Wow! My pace was below a 9:00 minute mile.

I have decided that I need to organize my music on my IPOD a bit more. I have 20 songs on my IPOD and listen to them over and over while I run. Some of them are slow. I need take the time to put the music on the IPOD.

I am enjoying the new shoes, I can tell a big difference.

Jan 3 - First NIKE PLUS

It was very cold for this run. The temperature did not get above 25 degrees today. When I left for the run the temperature was around 19 degrees. When I was in Iowa I ran with gloves but had to take them off because my hands got so hot. So decided to not run with gloves so I didn't have to worry about where I would keep the gloves like I did on the other runs.

Today I was scheduled to run 9 miles. I started out and yes it was cold and the wind made it a lot worse. The windchill must have been around 0 - 5 degrees. As I got farther from home my hands really got cold. They never warmed up like I anticipated. With the wind my hands were really hurting. In fact they hurt so bad I could barely stand it. I got about 2.9 miles away from home and I had to turn around. I could just about not stand it anymore. I had to head home to warm up. I felt like I was about hurt my hand through frost bite or worse. I had no choice but to run home. It was really slowing me down, but I had to keep running so I can warm my hands up.

This was the first run with the NIKE PLUS. I really enjoy the device. It is incredible that the device can keep up with how far I have gone. I calorbrated my running pace. It seems to be set for the correct mileage within a few yards. I love it that the device tells me when I hit 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles, half way, etc.

When I got home my hands were turning a dark color. I believe they were getting frost bitten. I slowly warmed them up, but as they warmed up it was excrutiating pain. I just sat on the floor in the bathroom and held my hands in luke warm water.

In taking a shower the normal water felt like it was boiling. I had to almost take a cold shower so that it felt normal. After about 2 hours my hands started feeling normal. I have learned my lesson on this one. Always, wear gloves. I believe it wasn't the temperature that made my hands so cold it was the wind.

My hands were darker for 3 full days as they recovered. I didn't get the whole 9 miles finished. I got 5.94 miles today. The NIKE PLUS also tracks my time, average pace and calaries burned. Time - 55 minutes 9 seconds, 9:17 minute mile pace, 893 calories. This was the first time I officially had my pace calculated. My goal pace for the race is 10 minute miles.
