May 27 - Last Run Until the Big Event

Today was just a 2 mile run. On Friday (tomorrow) we are planning to drive up to the Davenport, IA. So we needed to get everything packed up. We wanted to leave at 6:00 am so we make sure we don't get stuck in rush hour traffic in Nashville.

So I decided to come home early and run my 2 miles. The weather forecast in Madison was calling for a high of 86 degress with high humidity. So I needed to get a small bit of training in the sun. All my running as been at night when the sun wasn't beating on me. It looks like in Madison that the sun is really going to be beating on my pretty bad.

Today the Madison Marathon official came out with a statement about the heat and made recommendations as to keep from running into heat related illinesses. The statement said basically that safety comes first. In 2004 they had to close the course due to heat. The have established a flag system to talk to the runners. While flag meant conditions were good, yellow flag meant take caution conditions are going down, red flag meant the course is closed (walking is highly encouraged and black flag meant everyone needs to get off the course (buses will pick up runners). Seeing the statement made me a bit concerned. A forecast was attached to the statement which showed a high of 81. That doesn't sound too bad. But, the weather channel is still forecasting a high of 86 - 88. Those 5 - 8 degrees is a huge difference. Plus, Madison is right in between 2 lakes. I would assume the humidity is going to high. My thought is that this isn't the worse case. A predicted severe thunderstorm would be worse (like what happened in Nashville).

I headed out to run and the temperature was at 90 degrees with high humidity and heavy sun. I intentionally did not run in the shade to practice running directly in the sun. Also, I wanted to focus on my pace. Try to run race pace.

2:09 miles, 8:52 minute mile, 18:37 minutes, 315 calories

TOO FAST!! It is difficult for me to keep that pace down. The sun was hot and draining. At least I have a bit of experience running in the sun.

Leaving tomorrow morning at 6:00 (the time has come)!
