It was very cold for this run. The temperature did not get above 25 degrees today. When I left for the run the temperature was around 19 degrees. When I was in Iowa I ran with gloves but had to take them off because my hands got so hot. So decided to not run with gloves so I didn't have to worry about where I would keep the gloves like I did on the other runs.
Today I was scheduled to run 9 miles. I started out and yes it was cold and the wind made it a lot worse. The windchill must have been around 0 - 5 degrees. As I got farther from home my hands really got cold. They never warmed up like I anticipated. With the wind my hands were really hurting. In fact they hurt so bad I could barely stand it. I got about 2.9 miles away from home and I had to turn around. I could just about not stand it anymore. I had to head home to warm up. I felt like I was about hurt my hand through frost bite or worse. I had no choice but to run home. It was really slowing me down, but I had to keep running so I can warm my hands up.
This was the first run with the NIKE PLUS. I really enjoy the device. It is incredible that the device can keep up with how far I have gone. I calorbrated my running pace. It seems to be set for the correct mileage within a few yards. I love it that the device tells me when I hit 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles, half way, etc.
When I got home my hands were turning a dark color. I believe they were getting frost bitten. I slowly warmed them up, but as they warmed up it was excrutiating pain. I just sat on the floor in the bathroom and held my hands in luke warm water.
In taking a shower the normal water felt like it was boiling. I had to almost take a cold shower so that it felt normal. After about 2 hours my hands started feeling normal. I have learned my lesson on this one. Always, wear gloves. I believe it wasn't the temperature that made my hands so cold it was the wind.
My hands were darker for 3 full days as they recovered. I didn't get the whole 9 miles finished. I got 5.94 miles today. The NIKE PLUS also tracks my time, average pace and calaries burned. Time - 55 minutes 9 seconds, 9:17 minute mile pace, 893 calories. This was the first time I officially had my pace calculated. My goal pace for the race is 10 minute miles.
